PM launches urban forestry on lines of Miyawaki method to fight pollution

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday announced the development of 50 urban forests in Lahore based on the Miyawaki method as part of efforts to restore biodiversity and fight the climate crisis. “I have launched urban forestry on the lines of Miyawaki technique in Japan where the trees grow 10 times faster and 30 times denser and it is the best way to fight pollution,” the premier said on his Twitter handle. With the provincial capital being one of the most densely populated cities of Pakistan, the prime minister added, “50 sites have been chosen in Lahore." He further stated that the first experiment of Miyawaki was done at Liberty Roundabout Lahore last year. Upon his arrival, the premier was briefed on the progress of the development of 51 urban forest sites in the provincial capital, being built to overcome air pollution and protect the environment. Under the approach, dozens of native species are planted in the same area, close to each other, which ensures that the plants receive sunlight only from the top, and grow upwards than sideways. During the visit, the premier also chaired meetings to discuss the provision of Universal Health Coverage in Punjab, increase in fruits and vegetable markets and steps to reduce flour prices.
